The meeting was called to order at 5:30 pm by Diana Day.

I. Announcements

  1. Jay Dial and Petra Christman are new members of the teaching committee. The committee is seeking nominations for the 2001 Irwin Outstanding Educator Award.
  2. For 2001, the division’s officers will be: Ming-Jer Chen (Division Chair), Bert Cannella (Division Chair-Elect), Ranjay Gulati (Program Chair), and Javier Gimeno (Program Chair-Elect).
  3. BPS is moving to an electronic submission process. Authors will have to provide keywords, which will help match reviewers and papers.
  4. Recognition was offered for Bruce Lamont, who is stepping down as Newsletter Editor & Secretary.

II. Professional Development Workshop Report – Ranjay Gulati reported that the PDW were well run. More joint and new interest area PDWs were offered this year. The doctoral and new faculty consortiums are important development tools.

III. Program Report – Bert Cannella eloquently spoke about this year’s program in detail and thanked all involved. Some key statistics cited include: of 783 people asked to serve as reviewers, 357 agreed to do so. 308 paper submissions and 37 symposia proposals were received. 443 separate people are participating in this year’s program. 40% are non-U.S. scholars. Eight well-known, senior scholars were enlisted to facilitate interactive paper sessions in order to raise awareness of those sessions. Participation was increased over last year for the interactive sessions.

IV. Awards

  2. Free Press Best Dissertation Award – Ming-Jer Chen noted that there were 15 submissions for this award. The winner was Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra (Minnesota) whose dissertation is entitled “Resource development through the co-evolution of resources and scope.”
  3. Glueck Best Paper Award – Ranjay Gulati announced that this award went to Stan Xiao Li and Timothy J. Rowley, both of the University of Toronto, for their paper “Is it better to be talented, popular, or nice? The role of experiential and non-experiential information in interorganizational partner selection.”
  4. Robert Lischert Award – This award recognizes the best BPS paper by a doctoral student. The winner was Michael Roberto (Harvard) for his paper “Strategic decision-making process: Moving beyond painful trade-offs.”

V. Officer Recognition – Bert Cannella and Diana Day were recognized for their past year’s service as Program and Division Chair, respectively. Ming-Jer Chen was introduced as the new Program Chair. He noted that the division’s five-year survey is due and encouraged everyone to provide feedback about the division.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 pm.
