Minutes Business Meeting Business Policy and Strategy Division August 7, 2001 Toronto, Ontario
Ming-Jer Chen called the meeting to order at 5:30 pm. Ming-Jer noted that the division is doing well. The five-year review was very successful and is being used as an exemplar by the Academy. Also, our international Academy submissions are about 33%, up from 15% five years ago.
I. Announcements –
- Bill Bogner noted that the division’s finances are in very good shape. The division tries to maintain $10,000 as slack.
- For 2002, the division’s officers will be: Bert Cannella (Division Chair), Ranjay Gulati (Division Chair-Elect), Javier Gimeno (Program Chair), and Margie Peteraf (Program Chair-Elect).
II. Professional Development Workshop Report – Javier Gimeno reported that the PDW attracted over 800 participants. The PDW fell into three categories: Career Development Workshops, Skill Development Workshops, and Conversations on Strategy workshops. All went very well. Javier thanked the organizers of the many Professional Development workshops for their outstanding performance.
III. Program Report – Ranjay Gulati spoke about this year’s program and thanked all involved, especially Bert Cannella. Some key statistics cited include: There were 317 papers and 35 symposia submitted. 36% were from non-U.S. authors. 20% of reviewers were from overseas. The division was able to accept 111 papers in 28 sessions as well as 24 symposia. We have 10 papers in shared interest tracks and 36 in interactive paper sessions. Next year, the division will use a completely electronic review process.

- Free Press Best Dissertation Award – Bert Cannella noted that there were 13 submissions for this award. The winner was Belén Villalonga (Harvard) whose dissertation is entitled “‘Chop Shop’ Valuation Models and the Diversification Discount: Issues of Causality, Selectivity, and Aggregation.” Belén earned her Ph.D at UCLA.
- William Glueck Best Paper Award – Javier Gimeno announced that this award went to Tiziana Casciaro (Harvard) for a paper entitled “Determinants of governance structure in alliances: The role of strategic, task, and partner uncertainties.”
- Robert Litschert Award – This award recognizes the best BPS paper by a doctoral student. The winner was “A dilemma in response: Beyond resource allocation – examining the newspaper industry’s response to the Internet” by Clark Gilbert (Harvard).
V. Next Year’s Program – Javier Gimeno noted that next year’s program will be the first to be developed through an entirely electronic submission and review process and the first to be run from outside the United States. As program chair, he will place emphasis on internationalizing the program, providing quality reviews, and experimenting with more interactive sessions.
