Minutes
Business Meeting
Business Policy and Strategy Division
August 5, 2003
Seattle, WA

Past Division President Ranjay Gulati called the meeting to order at 5:30pm.

I. Reports

  1. Election Results. Past President Ranjay Gulati thanked the outgoing EC members (Gautam Ahuja, Irene Duhaime, Jim Fredrickson, Joe Mahoney, Todd Zenger, and Maurizio Zollo) and welcomed the new EC members (Nick Argyres, Tim Folta, Amy Hillman, Tammy Madsen, and Anju Seth). Ranjay announced that Anita McGahan was elected Assistant Program Chair for 2003 and that Margie Peteraf is now President-Elect. Ranjay expressed his sense of pride in the Division and his confidence in its leadership. He then introduced Javier Gimeno as the Division’s new President.
  2. Thank you to outgoing officers. Javier Gimeno presented outgoing Division President Ranjay Gulati, outgoing Program Chair Margaret Peteraf, and outgoing Newsletter Editor & Secretary Dave Ketchen with plaques expressing the Division’s gratitude for their service. Javier then introduced the incoming Newsletter Editor & Secretary, Jim Combs, and the new Reviewer Database Manager, Bert Cannella.
  3. Treasurer’s Report. Bill Bogner reported that the Division has a balanced budget wherein expenditures closely match revenue. However, a “cushion” is maintained so that anyone at any school could be supported as program chair.
  4. Professional Development Workshops. Assistant Program Chair Jim Westphal reported that over 1,000 people participated in PDWs this year. PDWs fell into three main themes: career development, teaching, and research. Thanks were offered to organizers of the doctoral, new faculty, and mid-career consortia, as well as to the organizers of PDW sessions.
  5. 2003 Conference Program. Program Chair Margie Peteraf reported several improvements to the review process. Many were behind-the-scenes improvements that further streamlined on-line submission and review. Visible improvements included an improved web interface and a more efficient system for matching papers to reviewers. The system now more easily transfers to future program chairs and other divisions.

The Division received 558 paper and 50 symposia submissions involving 999 different authors from 36 countries. The review process went very smoothly, thanks in large part to an ad hoc volunteer review team, consisting of Jim Westphal, Russ Coff, Peggy Lee, Cathy Maritan, and Karen Schnatterly. By the deadline, only 21 submissions lacked sufficient numbers of reviewers. These were handled by 67 additional volunteer emergency reviewers who responded generously to Margie’s request for aid. Margie offered her thanks for the hard work of these special volunteers and for the hard work of all of the reviewers. She also thanked Bert Cannella, Javier Gimeno, Julia Yaziji, Vince Collins, Laurie McCandless, Connie Helfat, Syd Finkelstein, and the Tuck School at Dartmouth for their support.

Reviews were provided by 1099 reviewers from 41 countries. BPS Outstanding Reviewer awards for 2003 went to: Yoon-Suk Baik, Mary Brenner, William Bogner, Juan Ignacio Canales, Albert Cannella, Xavier Castaner, Gino Cattani, Oliver Chatain, Russ Coff, Sven-Olof Collin, David Collis, Yosem Companys, Nicola Dragonetti, Lorraine Eden, Frances Fabian, Joyce Falkenberg, Joseph Gerard, Mark Hansen, Margaretha Hendricks, Amy Hillman, David Hoopes, Chihmao Hsieh, Duane Ireland, Scott Johnson, Jeffrey Kaufmann, Balaji Koka, Augustine Lado, Peggy Lee, Cathy Maritan, Kyle Mayer, Rita McGrath, Gerry McNamara, Mark Milstein, Patrick Moreton, G.
