Business Meeting Minutes 2004

Minutes
Business Meeting
Business Policy and Strategy Division
August 10, 2004
New Orleans, LA

Outgoing Division Chair Javier Gimeno called the meeting to order at 5:30.

I. Reports.

  1. Election Results. Outgoing Division Chair Javier Gimeno thanked the outgoing EC members (Tom Brush, Marjorie Lyles, Rich Makadok, Richard Priem, and Mary Tripsas) and welcomed the new EC members (Rajshree Agarwal, Marvin Lieberman, Joanne Oxley, Jan Rivkin, and Brian Silverman). Javier announced that Russ Coff was elected Assistant Program Chair for 2005, that Anita McGahan is the new Program Chair, and that Jim Westphal is now President-Elect.
  2. Comments from the Outgoing Division Chair. Outgoing Division Chair Javier Gimeno reminded everyone of the unexpected passing of Sumantra Ghoshal, who was a major contributor to the field. He announced that the BPS Division’s annual award for the best paper contributing to both research and practice has been renamed the: Sumantra Ghoshal Research and Practice Award, and that an endowment has been set up to support the award winner.

Javier went on to note that as the Division’s research methods have become more precise and its size has grown dramatically, the Division remains inclusive. However, our size presents several challenges in terms of remaining open without fragmentation and being inclusive without being formulaic.

Javier then introduced Margie Peteraf as the new Division Chair.
  3. Comments from the Incoming Division Chair. Margie Peteraf thanked Javier Gimeno for his service to the Division; he received a standing ovation from the members present. She also thanked Jim Westphal for his leadership in making this year’s program a success. Both Javier and Jim were given plaques in gratitude for their service. Finally, Margie acknowledged the efforts of the out-going Web Master, Steven Phelan, and introduced his replacement, Robert Wiggins.
  4. Treasurer’s Report. Bill Bogner reported that the Division has a balanced budget wherein expenditures closely match revenue. However, enough surplus is maintained so that anyone at any school could be supported as program chair. The Division can also support its activities throughout the year.
  5. Professional Development Workshops. Assistant Program Chair Anita McGahan reported that the PDWs accomplished three broad goals: broad representation of ideas, broad involvement among BPS membership, and collaboration with other divisions. There were over 1,200 participants in 27 workshops encompassing teaching, professional development, reviewing, research topics, and research methods. Anita thanked the leaders of the three consortia (Doctoral, New Faculty, and Mid-Carreer), as well as the session organizers. She also thanked the members of the Research Committee who are charged with determining the best paper award winners.
  6. 2004 Conference Program. Jim Westphal reported that this year was the first year papers were submitted through the web, allowing reviewers and session participants to download papers as needed. The process went smoothly; other divisions, and eventually the Academy overall, hope to emulate our system. Jim thanked his predecessors, Javier Gimeno who initiated the electronic submission process and Margie Peteraf who made important process improvements to that system.

There were 1,024 submitting authors from 42 countries, 50% from abroad. Overall, international was up 58% from three years ago. 1,292 reviewers from 46 countries reviewed the submissions. There is some evidence that the quality of submissions increased this year. The average rating for submissions increased 11 percent and average symposia proposal submission increased by 23 percent. The submissions also varied dramatically in terms of theoretical perspectives.

By the deadline, only 23 submissions required further review; 58 emergency reviewer volunteers handled these. Jim offered his thanks to all who participated in the process. Jim acknowledged general (and constant) support from Bert Cannella, Javier Gimeno, and Margie Peteraf; technical support from Julia Yaziji, Soo Lee, Bert Cannella, and Mike Hendron, Administrative support from Steve Boivie, and financial support from The McCombs School at the University of Texas. He also thanked his volunteer review team of Steve Boivie (Texas at Austin), Irene Duhaime (Georgia State University), Mike Hendron (Texas at Austin), Poonam Khanna (Texas at Austin), Don Lange (Texas at Austin), and Richard Priem (Wisconsin at Milwaukee).

Respectfully submitted,
