EXPANDED CONSORTIA FOR BPS DOCTORAL STUDENTS!
The Executive Committee of the BPS Division announces a new addition to our pre-conference activities for doctoral students: a Dissertation Consortium for advanced doctoral students. This new consortium will be offered in addition to our traditional Doctoral Consortium and the Managing Your Dissertation Workshop.
The EC of the BPS Division is also very pleased to announce a change in policy regarding admissions to our events for doctoral students. Beginning this year, we will work with doctoral supervisors from any school with a BPS-related doctoral program to help us to identify the best match for each doctoral student with each of these doctoral consortia. While the decision regarding admission naturally rests with the individual consortium chairs, our goal is to make BPS consortia available to as many qualified doctoral students as possible. In particular, we are eliminating the requirement that doctoral supervisors rank doctoral students in order of priority for consortium attendance.
For detailed information on how to register for any of the BPS division doctoral activities, see the relevant Call for Participation, following the brief descriptions below.
The new BPS Dissertation Consortium
Starting this year we will offer a new one-day Dissertation Consortium on Saturday of the PDW weekend. This new consortium will provide advanced students an opportunity to present shortened versions of their dissertation papers and receive in-depth feedback from a distinguished faculty panel. This consortium will also offer ample opportunities for networking with faculty and fellow participants. Priority for admission into the Dissertation Consortium will be given to students who have not previously attended the regular BPS Doctoral Consortium, but any advanced doctoral student in BPS (who is not applying to this year’s Doctoral Consortium) may apply. The BPS Doctoral Consortium
As usual, we will offer a 2-day Doctoral Consortium (running Friday evening through Sunday noon), this year re-oriented to best serve doctoral students at the proposal stage of the dissertation process: The objectives of the consortium are to support mid- to late-stage doctoral students as they shape and complete their dissertations, and to enhance their scholarship, teaching, and overall development. The BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop
On Sunday of the PDW program, we will offer the BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop. This workshop, open to all BPS doctoral students (with pre-registration) except those attending the doctoral consortium, is run by the finalists of the 2006 BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award. The finalists’ advisors also participate. The workshop offers practical advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertation and transitioning to their first academic position. Participants in the new Dissertation Consortium are encouraged to also sign up for the Managing Your Dissertation Workshop. Click here to read the official call for participants and how to apply.
