CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: BPS MANAGING YOUR DISSERTATION WORKSHOP

Academy of Management, Philadelphia, PA

Sunday, August 5, 2007, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

The BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop will be offered as a pre-conference activity for doctoral students in strategy at the 2007 Academy Meeting in Philadelphia. The workshop is open to all doctoral students. The workshop offers practical advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertation and transitioning to their first academic position. The workshop is scheduled for Sunday, August 4, 2007, 8:00 a.m.-12 noon. Pre-registration is required.

The workshop will be conducted in an informal setting where students will be able to interact with faculty and other students in small groups. Finalists from last year's BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award share the coordination of the workshop. These finalists are: Scott Johnson (Oklahoma State University), Jeroen Kuilman (Erasmus University), Pinar Ozcan (IESE), Hart Posen (University of Michigan), Pamela Sloan (HEC Montréal), Daniel Tzabbar (University of Central Florida), and Govert Vroom (Purdue University). In addition, several senior faculty members (the finalists’ advisors) will discuss their perspective on outstanding dissertation research.

If you are a doctoral student in strategy, you are encouraged to attend. Small group discussion will allow interaction of people at similar stages. Topics to be covered include: (a) managing a dissertation committee, (b) considerations on research design, (c) practical and technical issues associated with data collection, (d) seeking a job and preparing the job talk, (e) writing and defending the dissertation, and (f) carving up the dissertation into papers for publication.

Doctoral students interested in the workshop should pre-register no later than July 1, 2007 at the following site:

http://www.mgmt.purdue.edu/faculty/vroom/home.asp

The registration form on the above website will require, among other things, a brief summary of your dissertation research interests.

If you have questions, please contact Govert Vroom at vroom@purdue.edu.
