  1. General
    • Opening Remarks – Ming-Jer Chen welcomed the executive committee members to the meeting and briefly described the agenda.
    • Approval of Minutes from Winter Executive Committee Meeting – Dave Ketchen noted that the minutes from the Winter Meeting had been distributed electronically. The minutes were approved.
  2. Reports
    • Treasurer’s Report – Bill Bogner reported that the division’s finances are in
excellent shape. A detailed budget will appear in the fall newsletter.
    • Professional Development Workshops – Javier Gimeno reported that the
Conversations about Strategy, the Doctoral Consortium, and the New Faculty Consortium have all been well received. Attendance has been very good; some of the Conversations have attracted 75-90 people. Ming-Jer Chen commended Javier for his fantastic job of organizing the PDWs.
    • New Faculty Consortium – Tom Brush noted that this year consortium included 24 participants; each was 2-4 years post Ph.D. A website has been created for the consortium materials which could be linked to the division website.
Ming-Jer Chen noted we should attempt to attract 30-35 participants in the future. Suggestions to increase participations included touting the consortium during the Ph.D consortium (Anita McGahan) and calling department chairs (Margie Peteraf). Irene Duhaime wondered if we should add a post-tenure consortium. Dawn Harris and Anita McGahan volunteered to study this idea.
    • Doctoral Consortium – Todd Zenger reported that the consortium had 51 participants. About 10 applicants had to be turned away. New features for this year included small group round table discussions around five research themes. Bente Lowendahl encouraged the development of more clear application procedures, especially for schools with multiple programs that could provide participants. Ming-Jer Chen lauded the organizers of both consortia for their excellent work.
    • 2001 Program Update – Ranjay Gulati briefly described key statistics for the
program. There were 317 papers and 35 symposia submitted. 36% were from non-U.S. authors. 20% of reviewers were from overseas. The division was able to accept 111 papers in 28 sessions as well as 24 symposia. We have 10 papers in shared interest tracks and 36 in interactive paper sessions. The division now has a reviewer database that should simplify the review process in future years. Ming-Jer Chen thanked Ranjay for his outstanding work as program chair.
    • Awards – Bert Cannella announced that the winner of the Free Press Dissertation  Award is Belén Villalonga (Harvard) for her dissertation entitled “‘Chop Shop’ Valuation Models and the Diversification Discount: Issues of Causality, Selectivity, and Aggregation.” Javier Gimeno announced the winners of the best paper awards. The William Glueck Best Paper Award went to Tiziana Casciaro (Harvard) for a paper entitled “Determinants of governance structure in alliances: The role of strategic, task, and partner uncertainties.” The Robert Litschert Award for the BPS paper by a doctoral student went to “A dilemma in response: Beyond resource allocation – examining the newspaper industry’s response to the Internet” by Clark Gilbert (Harvard). Bert Cannella noted that the teaching committee selected Mike Hitt for the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award.
    • Research for Practice Award Committee – Anita McGahan described the recent
discussions among the committee members regarding the nature of this award. It is uncertain whether the award should go to a current Academy paper that seems to have the potential to influence practice or to a past work that has already influenced practice. Ming-Jer Chen asked the committee to study the issue further in advance of the winter meeting.
    • Website – Steve Phelan reported that he is working on a proposal to have a
professionally managed site. This will cost approximately $4000 per year. The firm will be paid only on delivery. The site should be ready around the end of October.

In closing, Ming-Jer Chen thanked all the folks who helped out with the division’s five-year review. Bert Cannella thanked Ming-Jer for his great job of leading the review. Bert announced that the winter meeting would take place the weekend of March 23, 2002 in San Antonio.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:56 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Dave Ketchen
