The meeting began at 3:35 pm.
I. General
- Opening Remarks. Javier Gimeno welcomed the executive committee members to the meeting and briefly described the agenda. He welcomed the new EC members and thanked the exiting EC members and the exiting Web Master, Steven Phelan, for their service. Javier also announced that Robert Wiggins had agreed to become the new Web Master, and that Mason Carpenter had agreed to serve in a special capacity to help the Division promote effective teaching.
- Approval of Minutes from the Winter Executive Committee Meeting. Javier Gimeno noted that Jim Combs had distributed the minutes from the winter meeting electronically. The minutes were approved without objection.
II. Reports
- Report on the Winter Meeting. Margie Peteraf reported that the winter EC meeting will take place at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire on February 19, 2005. She arranged accommodations at the Hanover Inn for $115.00/night. Dartmouth is near the Lebanon (N.H.) Municipal Airport and receives bus service from Manchester (N.H.) and Boston (MA). She said it is a beautiful location with skiing nearby, so it might be a good opportunity for sight seeing.
- Report from the Assistant Program Chair. Anita McGahan reported that there was enormous turnout for the PDWs, some to the point of overflowing. She felt that the quality of the sessions was strong overall. She thanked the EC for their support overall and specifically for changes in the catering budget that were approved via email in July.
- 2004 Consortia Reports
- Co-chair Tim Folta declared the 2004 BPS Doctoral Consortium a success. Chaired by Marjorie Lyles, a diverse group of 45 students participated from an equally diverse set of institutions (the one student per school rule was followed). Over one third of the participants were international. The participants were guided by a group of 12 faculty, one half of which were international. The presentations and discussions were high quality and students reported that it was a very good experience.
- Amy Hillman reported that 28 participants attended the 2004 New Faculty Consortium. Co-chaired by Joe Mahoney, it was also comprised of high quality presentations on topics relevant to new faculty. Amy also noted the high quality of the catering.
- Program Chair Report. Jim Westphal reported that the new all web-based submission system ran smoothly. The Division received 529 submissions from 1,024 authors in 42 countries. The number of submitting authors increased 10% over last year. The reviewer database now contains 1,292 reviewers. Very few emergency reviews were needed.
- Treasurers Report. Bill Bogner reported that membership increased by 331 over last year. A detailed budget was distributed and will appear in the fall newsletter. Bill stated that there were a few receipts pending, but that we should be close to budget for the annual meeting. Further, there are few expenditures outside of the annual meeting. However, he reminded the EC that we will likely incur new costs arising from new web-based initiatives and the activities of the new web master. Some discussion followed regarding the feasibility of moving the BPS reception off site in Hawaii to save money, but that Hawaii was perhaps not the right venue for such a move.
- d. Report of Annual Awards. Anita McGahan announced that the Minyuan Zhao will receive the 2004 Glueck Best Paper Award, Jeffrey H. Dyer and Nile W. Hatch will receive the 2004 Sumantra Ghoshal Research and Practice Award, and Gino Cattani will receive the 2004 Best Paper for a Doctoral Student. Margie Peteraf announced the following 5 finalists for the Outstanding Dissertation Award: Weiru Chen (INSEAD), Isin Guler (Boston), Nandini Lahiri, (Indian School of Business), Corey Phelps (Washington), and Raja Roy (Tulane). The winner will be Nandini Lahiri.
III. Continuing Business Items.
- Selection of Possible Consortia Participants. Russ Coff distributed a list of potential participants for both the Doctoral and New Faculty Consortia that he compiled with the aid of Tim Folta and Amy Hillman. A short discussion followed in which the need for diversity in approach to the field, especially the inclusion of behavioral approaches, was emphasized. A few changes were made to the list before it was passed without objection. Javier Gimeno suggested that if additions are needed, they can be submitted and approved via email. Russ Coff also passed out a list of potential participants for the 2005 Mid-Career Workshop. After some discussion about who would replace Don Hambrick as co-chair, the list was approved unanimously. The approved lists are attached.
- Jim Combs distributed copies of the BPS Constitution with proposed changes that would make the document reflect current practice. Javier Gimeno moved that the Constitution be changed so that the size of the Research and Teaching Committees can be easily changed. Anita McGahan amended the motion to place a floor of 16 and 4 members on the Research and Teaching Committees respectively. All of the proposed changes were agreed to unanimously and will appear on the spring ballot.
- Rich Makadok proposed that the EC be expanded to increase the number of potential candidates for Assistant Program Chair. A short discussion followed concerning whether members of the Research Committee should be allowed to stand for election and what experiences uniquely qualify EC members to stand. Based on Rajshree Agarwal’s suggestion, it was decided that more discussion is needed concerning how to better involve EC members.
- Javier Gimeno announced that in discussions with representatives of Blackwell Publishing, they had expressed interest in supporting the Division. He offered two possibilities: (1) sponsorship of the Outstanding Dissertation competition, and a reception following presentation of the Sumantra Ghoshal Award. EC members felt that both were viable options and encouraged Javier to follow-up to work with Blackwell to see what they are willing to do.
- Anju Seth voiced concern that pre-registration was not limiting attendance at PDWs, causing some session chairs to change their planned format. Anita McGahan said that many pre-registration requests were initiated to establish minimum attendance, not to reduce overflow. In general, it is the responsibility of the PDW Session Chair’s to decide if they want to police pre-registration. Anita agreed to note in the documentation for future Assistant Program chairs the need for Session Chairs to be aware of the potential for overcrowding.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:05 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jim Combs
